Martin E. Segal
Born in Vitebsk, Russia in 1916, MARTIN E. SEGAL immigrated to the United States in 1921. He founded The Segal Company, employee benefit consultants and actuaries, in 1939, serving as President until 1967 and as Chairman from 1967 to 1991. He was a partner in Wertheim & Co., investment bankers, from 1967 until his retirement from there in 1982. For nearly half a century, Segal has been an outstanding figure in arts and education in New York City. He was Chairman of Lincoln Center from 1981 to 1986 and has been Chairman Emeritus since then. He was Chairman of The New York International Festival of the Arts from 1985 until its conclusion in 2002; first Chairman of the New York City Arts in Education Week in 1998; served in founding roles as a member of the Board of Directors of Public Radio International from 1981-1994 (and now as Counselor-at-Large), Founding President of The Film Society of Lincoln Center, and a founding advisor, and now is Sole Honorary Member of the Board of Directors of The Library of America; Trustee of The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton from 1972 to 1991 and Trustee Emeritus since then; and was the first Chairman of the Advisory Commission for Cultural Affairs of the City of New York. He is a current or former board member of nearly two dozen other cultural and educational organizations, including The Graduate Center Foundation, Inc. of The City University of New York, of which he is Vice Chairman of the Board. He has received numerous awards and honors from the city, state, other nations and institutions, including six honorary doctorates.
