Julie Harris
JULIE HARRIS has received five Tony Awards, the most ever won by an actor? the first as the free-spirited Sally Bowles in John van Druten's I am a Camera in 1952, her second in 1956 as St. Joan in Lillian Hellman's adaptation of Jean Anouilh's The Lark, a third in 1969 for Forty Carats, followed four years later as Mary Todd Lincoln in The Last Mrs. Lincoln by James Prideaux. In 1977, she won her unprecedented fifth Tony as Emily Dickinson in William Luce's play The Belle of Amherst (directed by Charles Nelson Reilly). Miss Harris also carries the laurel of receiving more Tony Award nominations than any other actor. She received four additional nominations for her work in The Au Pair Man (with Charles Durning), Marathon '33, Skyscraper (starring opposite Charles Nelson Reilly), and Lucifer's Child. She made her Broadway debut in 1945 in It's a Gift and since then has starred in more than 30 productions on the New York stage. Miss Harris recently starred in The Road to Mecca at Long Wharf Theatre and was in the first national tour of Lettice & Lovage. Other works directed by Charles Nelson Reilly include Exile in Jerusalem by Motti Lerner with Dennis Boutsikaris at Williamstown Theater Festival. Among her many films, Miss Harris was nominated for an Academy Award as Frankie in The Member of the Wedding, and is probably best remembered as Abra opposite James Dean in Elia Kazan's East of Eden. Her notable TV appearances have brought her nine Emmy Award nominations. She won the coveted award for Little Moon of Alban and Victoria Regina. Her longest and best known TV role was Lilimae Clements on the CBS series Knots Landing. Her recent TV credits include Scarlett, Secrets, The Christmas Wife with Jason Robards, The Christmas Tree (directed by Sally Field) and Ellen Foster for Hallmark due out this Christmas.
