Henry Hewes
HENRY HEWES has been an American Theatre Wing Board member since 1967 and has served as a Wing representative on the Tony Administration Committee. From 1951 to 1976, he was the drama critic for the Saturday Review. He served several times as a Pulitzer Prize juror and edited the Best Plays Theatre Yearbook from 1961 to 1963. From 1965 to 1987 he chaired the Margo Jones Award Committee, which encouraged theatres to produce untested plays. In 1974, he founded the American Theatre Critics Association and served as Executive Secretary. He, along with critics Clive Barnes and Dan Sullivan, persuaded the Tony Awards to nationalize their reach by giving an annual award to a theatre outside the New York City area. A long time believer that there should be one award for the best of each season, whether Broadway or Off- Broadway, he devised the Drama Desk in 1963, with a proportional voting system that would enable them to do that. He had previously done the same with the American Theatre Wing's Joseph Maharam Design Awards (now renamed the Henry Hewes Awards). In 1974, he suggested and initiated the American Theatre Wing's Working in the Theatre seminars, which are now seen on CUNY-TV. In 1997, a special La MaMa ETC 30th Anniversary Award was given to Henry and Jerry Tallmer, for their vital contribution to the survival of Off-Off-Broadway. And in 2002 both Henry and Isabelle Stevenson were inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame.
