ELYSA GARDNER has covered theater and pop music at USA TODAY since 2000. It's a dream role for a critic and reporter who grew up listening to both rock and, thanks to a mom who sang pop standards professionally before getting married, original Broadway cast albums. Writing about Harold Pinter and Ashlee Simpson on the same day can be a challenge, but it beats working. Prior to joining USA TODAY, Elysa wrote for a number of publications. She was a stringer -- that is, a correspondent without salary or benefits -- for the Los Angeles Times, a "senior critic" (regular contributor without salary or benefits) at Rolling Stone, and a Night Life columnist (regular contributor with salary, but no byline) at The New Yorker. She has also interviewed pop stars for VH1 and dissected them on various cable networks. You're likely to have spotted her if you don't blink a lot. She lives in New York City.
