Basil Twist
BASIL TWIST is a third generation puppeteer. He became the only American to graduate from the Ecole Superieure Nationale des Arts de la Marionnette in Charleviile-Mezieres, France, one of the worlds premiere puppetry training programs. Twists work was first spotlighted in New York in 1995 with The Araneidae Show. Later presented in the 1996 International Puppetry Festival at The Public Theater, Twist was awarded a 1997 Bessie Award and a UNIMA Citation of Excellence. The production toured internationally and most recently was seen at Pittsburghs Andy Warhol Museum. 1998 was a landmark year for Twist with a Drama Desk Award nomination for his work with Theatre Coutures Off-Broadway hit Tell Tale, and the premiere of Symphonie Fantastique at HERE Arts Center. Symphonie Fantastique subsequently has toured nationally and internationally; it is currently playing at Off-Broadways Dodger Stages. For Symphonie Fantastique Twist received a 1999 Drama Desk Nomination, a UNIMA Citation of Excellence and an OBIE Award. His other works include Petrushka, commissioned by Lincoln Center, and Master Peter’s Puppet Show with Eos Orchestra; he was the underwater puppetry consultant on the most recent Harry Potter film. Twist developed the puppetry for Paula Vogels play The Long Christmas Ride Home in productions at Trinity Repertory Company, The Vineyard Theatre and Long Wharf Theatre. He is collaborating with director Lee Breuer to develop Mabou Mines new opera Red Beads; will premiere a commission from The Japan Society, Dogugaeshi, in November 2004; and will create a new staging of Respighi’s La Bella Dormente Nel Bosco for Spoleto, USA and The Lincoln Center Festival in May 2005. He is the director of The Dream Music Puppetry Program at HERE Arts Center in New York City.
