André Bishop
ANDRÉ BISHOP, Artistic Director of Lincoln Center Theater since January 1992, has developed and produced new plays and musicals by many of America's leading playwrights, composers, and lyricists. Before arriving at Lincoln Center, Mr. Bishop served as Playwrights Horizons' Artistic Director for ten years and as its Literary Manager for six. His many successful productions at that theater included three Pulitzer Prize winners: The Heidi Chronicles, Driving Miss Daisy, and Sunday in the Park with George. Prior to his tenure at Playwrights Horizons, Mr. Bishop worked for the New York Shakespeare Festival and the American Place Theatre. He has taught at New York University and Hunter College, served on the Board of Overseers of the Loeb Drama Center, and sat on panels for the Theater and Opera-Musical Theater Programs of the National Endowment for the Arts. He and Playwrights Horizons received the 1983 Margo Jones Award for contributions made to the American theater; the 1989 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Achievement for a Body of Work, specifically in the development of new American plays and playwrights; and a special Drama Desk Award in 1992 for his work with Playwrights Horizons. As Lincoln Center Theater's Artistic Director, he is responsible for the continuing Playwrights Program - a series of readings and workshops devised to develop new work and foster new artists. He supervises the education program, Open Stages, and the Theater's popular journal, Lincoln Center Theater Review. With Bernard Gersten and Dramaturg Anne Cattaneo, he started Lincoln Center Theater's Directors Lab which supports and nurtures the work of approximately one hundred young directors each year in a laboratory setting. Recent Lincoln Center Theater seasons under his artistic direction have included new plays and musicals, revivals and new adaptations of classic works, and solo performances. They include Wendy Wasserstein's The Sisters Rosensweig, Abe Lincoln In Illinois, five-time Tony winner Carousel, Eric Bogosian's subURBIA, Tom Stoppard's Hapgood, Arcadia and The Invention of Love, David Hare's Via Dolorosa, Nicholas Hytner's production of Twelfth Night (Broadcast on PBS Live from Lincoln Center), and the award-winning revivals of The Heiress, A Delicate Balance, Awake and Sing! on Broadway, the much-loved musical Contact, and the recent Tony winners Henry IV, The Light In The Piazza, and The Coast of Utopia at the Beaumont.
